As if life as a mermaid wasn’t already amazing, (beautiful hair, under-the-sea partying and a free clam shell bra!) there’s now the chance to grab a gold medal, too. Budding merfolk are being invited to swim their way to the podium in the first Gloucestershire Mermaid Olympics.
The Mermaid Academy, which runs mermaid swimming classes in Tewkesbury, Brockworth and Cheltenham, plans to celebrate the end of term with a series of Olympic-style events for its students.
Mermaid Academy founder, Rebecca Turner told SoGlos that the ‘Gloucestershire Mermaid Olympics is just for younger students at the moment, but if it’s a success we might roll out the competition to our adult mermaids too.’
Inspired by the announcement that the official Merlympics will be held in the UK during 2018, Rebecca said she wanted the chance for young mermaids to enjoy competing in their tails and monofins.
They’ll be competing in disciplines such as underwater rolls, timed distance swimming and tail flips in a handstand. The events are taking place during classes this week, with the next Mermaid Olympics event planned for the summer.
Currently, all Mermaid Academy classes are full, but if you want to be part of that world there are plans to introduce a new class at Cheltenham’s Dean Close School on Friday nights, from March 2018.
