The Forest of Dean's 800-year-old castle, St. Briavels, which once served as a hunting lodge for King John and a debtors’ prison, has been named as one of the best haunted hotels in the country — ranking third, with a five-star rating based on 251 reviews.
Said to have ghostly activity in nearly every room, St. Briavels Castle witnessed many a murder during its heyday in the 12th century, and it is thought that many tormented souls never left — and has become a magnet for ghost hunters.
Paranormal investigation nights at the castle are said to have witnessed the pitiful cries of an unseen baby, invisible hands tugging at clothes and the sensation of someone gripping at a visitor’s throat. It’s no wonder that some guests have left in the dead of night!
According to those who carried out the survey: 'Our study of these ‘haunted' hotels sheds light on a fascinating aspect of British hospitality and tourism. Many of these establishments, like the high-ranked YHA St Briavels in Gloucestershire, are primarily luxury or historic hotels with rich histories.
'What is particularly
interesting is how these properties have unintentionally become part of local
lore and urban legends, adding an extra layer of mystique to their appeal.
'While spooky encounters were not part of some of these hotels’ marketing strategies, they acknowledge the rich history of their locations and embrace their guests' excitement for Halloween thrills.
'What elevates their unofficial ‘haunted’ status is the whispered stories of unexplained phenomena shared by guests, which ripple out and attract more people seeking potential paranormal experiences. These hotels appeal to a diverse range of guests — from skeptics to those open to paranormal possibilities — while maintaining their reputation for excellent hospitality.'
