Black Hearts Comedy Club in May
15 May – Stroud’s very own bi-monthly comedy club Black Hearts is returning to the Subscription Rooms in May with a lively line-up of stand-ups including Mandy Knight, Simon Evans and Micky Flanagan.
Black Hearts – Stroud’s own bi-monthly comedy club is back again with a third dose of first rate, funny bone-hitting humour fresh for May 2008.
Taking to the Stroud Subscription Rooms’ stage on Thursday 15 May 2008, will be MC for the evening Mandy Knight. Described by The Independent as ‘a virtuoso comedienne,’ according to organisers the master of ceremonies is a true dame of British stand-up, being the first female to compere at The Comedy Store among her many achievements.
The winner of the Time Out Best Female Comic award, Knight has performed four one-woman shows in Edinburgh, London and Sydney, was one the main characters on Jo Brand’s Like it or Lump it television show, hosted Love Time and worked with David Baddiel in his last series The Baddiel Syndrome, no less.
Following Knight’s sparkling introductions will be the turn of Simon Evans, bringing with him the dry observational humour he is renowned for on the comedy circuit, no doubt. Expect lashings of sarcasm from the Edinburgh Festival veteran and some snappy dressing.
Organisers say: ‘Simon uses no bad language whatsoever and can raise an eyebrow Jack Benny would have been proud of,’ he’s a prolific writer for both TV and radio, and his seemingly snobbish stage manner makes no concession to likeability – instead leaving his brilliantly sarcastic lines to win over the audience in Stroud.
East End stand-up Micky Flanagan has been on the professional circuit for more than a decade, leaving the last comedian to take to the stage more than enough time to perfect his routine one would hope. Ruthlessly deconstructing the Cockney myth with his razor-sharp wit, expect comic tales of a working class upbringing – littered with references to alphabetti spaghetti – on the evening.
Flanagan’s unique brand of intelligent humour has proven appeal with audiences, as he bemoans the lot of modern man in pursuit of the perfect idle day, and celebrates being turned away from a night club because his feet are killing him.
With a line-up like this, Black Hearts tickets will be like gold dust this May.
