Behind the decks with Darren Price
Subtone’s resident DJ, Darren Price, dishes the dirt on his weirdest request, his all time favourite track and what it’s like playing alongside Judge Jules.
We’ve heard the key to a DJs’ success is their name?
I pretty much go by my real name for DJing, but also use Priceless as an artist.
Priceless – how come?
Well, someone in Ibiza said to me you are a ‘priceless’ DJ and I thought it was a good name.
How long have you been DJing?
Ooh it’s too far back to remember, since 1994 I think! Although my first paid gig was in 1996.
Describe your style?
I play all kinds of music, but at heart I love my electro and funky house which you can hear on a Friday and Saturday night at Subtone.
Weapon of choice – laptop or decks?
CD decks. I used to play vinyl years ago, but everything is on CDs nowadays.
What’s the hottest tune you can't stop playing right now?
There are two that I love at the moment Ida Corr’s ‘Let Me Think About It’ the Fedde Le Grand Remix and Robyn’s ‘With Every Heartbeat’ the Tong & Spoon Mix – they’re both great.
What’s your all time favourite track?
This is a really hard one as I love so many, but the stand out tune for me is the 1993 track by Grace ‘Not Over Yet’.
Pick a song guaranteed to get people on the dance floor?
‘Insomnia’ by Faithless – guaranteed to get the dancefloor heaving.
Is there something you would rather die than have to play?
Anything by Steps, shocking!
Weirdest request?
I was playing an electro house set and someone asked me for ‘Cotton Eyed Joe’! That was just wrong.
Is being a DJ a great job to attract the opposite sex?
Well, it can be…
The most bizarre thing you’ve seen in a club?
Well, you would normally see it in the bedroom, let’s put it that way!
Career highlight?
There are two for me – being resident of the Coco Loco Room at Privilege in Ibiza (which is the biggest club in the world) in 2000, or DJing to more than 4000 nutters with Judge Jules, Anne Savage and Scott Bond at the Faith April Ball, at Cheltenham Racecourse in 2001.
Career low point?
Having all my records & CDs robbed out of Ibiza’s Café Bay Bar in 1999, I was completely devastated.
Burning ambition?
To fly a jet fighter.
If you could play at any club in the world, where would it be?
Pacha in Ibiza, no question about it.
DJ hero?
Pete Tong.
Any advice for aspiring local DJs?
You have to remember it’s all about what the people in front of you want to hear, not what you want to play! You are not Judge Jules.
Favourite nightclub in Gloucestershire?
Moda! Only joking, Subtone of course.
You can hear Darren Price DJ at Subtone every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night.
