The Royal International Air Tattoo is one of the biggest air shows in the global calendar of aviation events, and on Saturday 12 to Sunday 13 July 2008 swarms of almost 200,000 flying fans from across Gloucestershire and beyond were due to converge at RAF Fairford for the two-day spectacular.

News that the Royal International Air Tattoo 2008 has been cancelled on the Saturday and now the Sunday has just been announced, for further details read Air Tattoo cancelled due to heavy rain.

The following highlights were planned:

The world’s most advanced jet fighter, the F-22A Raptor, will make its UK debut at the Air Tattoo 2008 at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire this summer, predicted to thrill aviation fans from near and far. The fighter aircraft incorporates state-of-the-art stealth technology, sophisticated weaponry and vectored thrust to give it an unrivalled combination of secrecy, power and manoeuvrability. With a top speed of 1,140mph the F-22A is capable of outperforming any existing fighter aircraft in both air-to-air and air-to-ground combat.

Visitors to the International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford in 2008 will also be the first in the country to witness the precision aerial manoeuvres and unique capabilities of the world’s only operational fifth-generation fighter aircraft, which will be piloted by Major Paul ‘Max’ Moga from the Air Combat Command F-22A Demonstration Team based in Virginia.

Organisers have also revealed that The Royal International Air Tattoo 2008 will also include official celebrations to mark the RAF’s 90th anniversary this year, including the legendary Red Arrows’ only visit to the Cotswolds this summer, as well as displays from six other international teams from around the world.

Spectators will be able to enjoy a dramatic World War One dogfight, with aerial demonstrations of Battle of Britain fighters and bombers including Spitfires and Hurricanes; there will also be Lancasters, Tornadoes, and Chinook helicopters taking to the skies. Another highlight will be an explosive role demonstration showing the Royal Air Force in action.

On the ground there is also an array of static displays – from international military aircraft; vintage cars; and a Formula One racing car; as well as stunt driving; kit car racing and the chance to drive the latest Land Rovers on an off-road course.

Under 16s are admitted to the Air Tattoo free of charge, and young visitors can meet the pilots, sit in aircraft and enjoy Tri@RIAT – which includes interactive activities from engineering and robotics to sport and music – as well as having the chance to have a go in the fun fair. Plus, there is live music on the Concert Stage, not to mention the potential to shop until you drop at a variety of stalls and stands.
