Would be nice if you could have a trip on a small boat instead of having to paddle. Will give 10 stars if they introduce that!

Unless you’ve been living in a cave for the last few months you’ll no doubt know that the Premier League’s new season gets underway on 11 August 2007. With the selection of pubs showing live matches growing by the year, SoGlos.com has whittled the choices down to five of its favourites to watch the football, across Gloucestershire.

With eight televisions showing a range of sports, including an outdoor screen in the smoking area, The Lansdown is becoming increasingly popular with Cheltenham’s football fans. And if you don’t want to miss a second of the match you can also reserve one of their private booths – which comes complete with two of its own plasma screens and a fridge stocked with chilled drinks, so nipping to the bar won’t mean you miss an all-important goal.

Against some very stiff competition, Baker Street takes the top slot in Gloucester city centre’s selection of venues to watch the beautiful game. With a regular line-up of live sports shown on the down-to-earth pub’s seven screens (including two huge projection screens), a lively atmosphere is guaranteed on match days. Plus, by showing multiple games at the same time, Baker Street has become a favourite with football fans of all strips.

Mackenzies Café Bar in Cirencester is where many of the Cotswolds’ footie fans flock on match days. With a number of large screens showing the action live on both floors of the modern bar, no matter where you’re sitting you’ll have a prime view of play. The atmosphere is always boisterous and a variety of food and drinks promotions means that the fun can continue after the final whistle has been blown.

The Angel Hotel in the centre of Coleford offers a lively venue for the Forest of Dean’s football fans. The big matches are shown on a large projection screen and if you stay after full-time, there are also regular live music gigs. Weekend victories can also be celebrated long into the night in Magnum’s nightclub next door.

Families hoping to catch the big match in a friendly environment can do no better than heading to the Prince of Wales Inn near Stroud. As well as the games being shown in high definition on two big screens, real ales are on tap and there is a quality menu if oranges won’t fill you up at half-time. Plus the pleasant gardens and outdoor play area provide the perfect entertainment for children while the games are in full flow.
