While in the past you might have been tempted to give the back garden some tender loving care via a bottle of Miracle-Gro or two, for today’s green-fingered gardeners, organic, home-made compost is the only choice.

Being held in conjunction with Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust’s composting experts, on Saturday 10 May 2008 Snowshill Manor will be holding a special Conquer Compost Workshop, revealing how to master this age-old skill.

Led by compost officers Kate Newman and Jo Worthy-Jones, the workshop will explore the components of good compost, with the opportunity to see behind the scenes at Snowshill Manor’s gardens with a tour of their own system at work. The workshop will also give guests the chance to get up close and personal with nature’s best fertiliser at the various stages of decay, with the aid of a microscope.

‘Composting is an easy, green and very cheap way of recycling natural resources. Just like baking, though, it’s crucial to get the recipe and cooking right – and that’s what you’ll learn at this workshop,’ said Snowshill Manor visitor services manager Dominic Hamilton.

While the exact recipe will be revealed on the day, peelings from the kitchen, tea bags, shredded paper, mown grass, prunings and clippings all go to making a nutrient-rich matter which is spread on the beds around Snowshill’s garden, producing a fantastic display of flowers each year.

Snowhill’s hillside garden in particular, run on organic principles, benefits from plenty of vegetable matter each year – giving guests at the seminar an example of how their own garden could look with a few pointers from the pros.
