Spanning over 70 years of British creativity, the Birmingham Royal Ballet is set to return to the Everyman in Cheltenham this April to perform ballets from two of the outstanding British choreographers of the last century, the Company’s founder choreographer Frederick Ashton and his successor Kenneth MacMillan, as well as new work from company dancer Kit Holder.

Dante’s Divine Comedy inspired composer Franz Liszt to create the score for Frederick Ashton’s ballet Dante Sonata. First presented in 1940 with Margot Fonteyn and Robert Helpmann, the ballet depicts a conflict between the forces of good and evil.

Elite Syncopations was created in 1974 for The Royal Ballet and remains one of Kenneth MacMillan’s best-loved creations. Played by a ragtime band to the music of jazz legend Scott Joplin, this piece promises to be a riot of colour and vibrant dance moves.

Finally, audiences will be able to catch a new work entitled Small Worlds choreographed by one of the company’s leading dancers, Kit Holder and with music by ballet composer Igor Stravinsky. Inspired by Kandinsky’s paintings, this new piece is energetic and engaging and showcases the wealth of talent the Company can offer.

This will be Birmingham Royal Ballet’s second visit to the Everyman, following their sell-out debut. Artistic director David Bintley said: ‘We came to Cheltenham for the first time last year and absolutely loved it. The theatre was a great place to perform and we’re looking forward to returning as part of our 2008 tour to a venue not normally associated with a company of this size.’

Described as the UK’s premier touring dance company, this is an unmissable opportunity for audiences to catch the breathtaking skill and versatility from a truly world class ballet company, when the talented dancers take to the Everyman’s stage.
