A collection containing some never before seen work of one of the world’s best-known wildlife artists, Simon Combes, has gone on show at Nature in Art.

The African Sketchbook exhibition, assembled with the help of his family, will be the first time a collection of Simon Combes’ private field sketches and preliminary drawings have been shown in public. Plus, visitors to Nature in Art will also have the chance to see a number of Combe’s magnificent original paintings as well.

Combes began to draw, and eventually paint, whilst serving with the British army in Africa. A sell-out exhibition followed and, after becoming a full-time artist in 1974, his work began to be acquired by public and private collections worldwide.

He spent countless hours out in the African bush observing wildlife, making sketches and preliminary drawings in a variety of media including charcoal, ink, pastel, pencil, watercolour and even biro – which will all be on public display in Gloucestershire in March and April.

African Sketchbook will appeal to lovers of art and wildlife, and promises to provide a fascinating insight into the experiences of a world renowned artist.
